How we test home gym equipment
Every score on this site comes from the method below. It is published in full, versioned, and dated so you can judge the work rather than take our word for it. If we change how we score, the version number changes and affected reviews get re-scored in public.
What this site is, in plain terms
This is an affiliate website. We earn commission when you buy through certain links — full detail on the disclosure page. We do not buy, borrow, receive or physically handle any product on this site. Nothing here is a hands-on review, and we never imply otherwise.
Most "best of" pages on the internet imply testing that never happened. We are not going to do that. Instead, every comparison, score and recommendation is built from:
- Manufacturer specifications, taken from the current published listing.
- UK pricing we track ourselves, automatically, on a weekly cycle.
- Published warranty and support terms.
- Systematic analysis of verified owner reviews and independent UK coverage.
That is genuinely useful — it is how we caught, for example, a rowing machine brand marketed as British that is actually built in the US. But it is not the same thing as having used the product, and no page on this site dresses it up as if it were.
What we score, and how it's weighted
Six criteria, weighted for how much they actually affect living with a piece of equipment in a normal UK home. Overall scores are the weighted average — never an unexplained editorial number.

| Real-world footprint | 20% | Manufacturer-published assembled and folded dimensions, and the floor area they imply for actual use, not just storage. We flag it when a listing omits the folded size — which happens more often than it should. |
| Noise | 15% | The biggest data gap in this category: most manufacturers publish no usable dB figure, and the few that do are frequently disputed by owners. We report the manufacturer's claim, any independent measurement we can find and cite a source for, and say plainly when neither exists, rather than inventing a number. |
| Value at UK prices | 20% | Price against real UK retail, not RRP theatre. We track this ourselves — automatically, weekly, across the major retailers — and flag when an 'RRP £599, now £299' has never actually been £599. |
| Assembly & living with it | 10% | Stated build time, tools required and instruction quality from the manufacturer, checked against what verified owners actually report — a '20-minute build' that owners consistently describe as a two-person, hour-long job gets marked down. |

What the scores mean
A 7/10 here is a genuinely good product, not a polite failure. We use the full range, including the bottom of it.

How we handle noise
Noise is the single most common worry we see from UK buyers in flats and terraced houses, and it is also the category's biggest data gap. Across walking pads and air bikes alike, most manufacturers publish no dB figure at all, and where one is published it frequently doesn't match what owners report.
We do not own a sound meter and we do not claim to have measured anything ourselves. What we do instead:
- State the manufacturer's own dB claim, where one exists, clearly attributed as theirs.
- Cite any independent measurement we can find, with a link to its source, when it conflicts with the manufacturer's figure.
- Say plainly "no reliable figure exists" rather than inventing one or repeating a marketing adjective like "whisper-quiet" with nothing behind it.
Prices
Every price on this site carries the date it was checked. We track UK prices weekly across the major retailers, which means we can tell you when a "sale" price is simply the normal price with a bigger number crossed out next to it. Those checks feed our UK Home Gym Price Index.
Money, and how it could bias us
We earn affiliate commission when readers buy through our links, and the commission rate varies between retailers. That is a real conflict of interest, so here is how we contain it:
- Scores are set before any affiliate link is added to a page.
- We link to the retailer with the best price and availability for the reader, not the best commission for us.
- We do not accept payment for a review, a score, or a place in a list.
- We do not accept free products in exchange for coverage.
- Where we recommend against buying something, that page still carries links — losing the commission is the point of being trustworthy.

Why there are no author names on this site
Reviews here are published by the site as an organisation rather than under individual bylines. Plenty of sites invent a "fitness expert" persona with a stock headshot and some certifications nobody checks; we would rather show you the method than a face.
The trade-off is that you should hold this page to a high standard, because it is what you're trusting instead of a name. It is dated and versioned. If a score here doesn't match your experience of a product, that is worth telling us about.
