Abductor & Adductor Machines
The abductor (outer thigh) and adductor (inner thigh) machines are seated units where padded arms press against the outside or inside of your knees against resistance, isolating the muscles that move your leg away from or towards your body's midline. They're usually sold as a pair — one machine, two settings, or two separate stations. Neither is a fat-burning shortcut for your thighs, and for most home gyms a resistance band covers what they do.
What do they actually train?
The abductor machine trains hip abduction — moving your leg out to the side — worked mainly by the gluteus medius and minimus, smaller glute muscles on the outer hip that help stabilise your pelvis when you walk, run or stand on one leg. The adductor machine trains the opposite movement, hip adduction, worked by the inner thigh group: adductor longus, brevis, magnus and the gracilis.
Where gym mythology overstates both: they were marketed hard through the 1980s and 90s as "toning" machines that would slim or reshape the inner and outer thighs specifically. That's spot reduction, and it doesn't work — you can't choose where fat comes from by training the muscle underneath it. The honest version is narrower but still real: these machines do strengthen genuine stabiliser muscles that matter for hip health, running economy and change-of-direction sports, which is exactly why physios use band-based versions of the same movements in rehab.
Do you need one at home?
No, for nearly everyone. These are isolation machines for two relatively small muscle groups, and a loop resistance band trains the identical movement pattern standing up, lying down or seated, for around £10–£20 rather than the space and cost of a machine. The exercises a physio prescribes for hip stability or injury prevention are almost always the banded versions, not a seated machine — if you're working through a specific hip or knee issue, speak to a physiotherapist about what's appropriate for you rather than assuming either version is automatically right.
The case for one at home is thin: mainly bodybuilders chasing extra isolation volume once compound leg training is already well established, or people who specifically prefer machine-based training and already have the space. For general fitness, hip stability or injury prevention, it's not a priority purchase.
What to use instead at home
A single resistance band covers both movements — abduction and adduction — through several exercise variations.
- Banded lateral walks (abductors)
A loop band around your ankles or just above your knees, then side-step in a slight squat. This is a genuine strength-and-stability exercise for the same outer-hip muscles the abductor machine targets, and it's what most physios reach for before ever suggesting a machine.
- Standing band or cable-style hip abduction
Anchor a band low on a door or table leg, loop it around one ankle, and kick that leg out to the side while standing on the other. It isolates the same movement the seated machine does, just standing instead of seated.
- Clamshells and side-lying leg raises (abductors)
Lying on your side, knees bent, lifting the top knee (clamshell) or lifting a straight top leg (side leg raise) both load hip abduction with nothing but a mat. A light band around the knees adds resistance once bodyweight gets easy.
- Banded seated adduction, Copenhagen planks or side lunges (adductors)
A band looped around both ankles and squeezed together seated trains adduction directly. Side lunges and sumo or wide-stance squats also load the inner thigh hard as a secondary mover, and a Copenhagen plank (shin resting on a raised surface) is a well-established adductor strength exercise once you're ready for something harder.
If you do want one
Standalone home abductor/adductor units are less common than an attachment or station bundled into a multi-gym — most compact home versions are a single seat that converts between abduction and adduction settings rather than two separate machines. Look for pads that adjust to your leg length, smooth, sealed resistance (pneumatic, plate-loaded or band-based rather than an exposed cable), and confirm it genuinely converts between both movements if that's what you're expecting.
A compact home unit typically needs around 1–1.3m of length and 0.6–0.8m of width. As a rough, unverified UK guide, expect somewhere around £150–£450 for a compact home abductor/ adductor unit — always check current listings, since this bracket moves.
Common mistakes on abductor and adductor machines
- Swinging the legs with momentum instead of a slow, controlled press — this is the single most common fault and it turns a targeted exercise into a wasted rep.
- Slouching in the seat with a tucked pelvis, which changes the angle the muscle is working through and reduces how much it actually does.
- Loading so much weight that the range of motion shrinks to a few inches — a lighter weight moved through the full range trains the muscle better than a heavy weight moved through half of it.
- Expecting spot fat loss from the inner or outer thighs. Training a muscle doesn't preferentially burn fat from the skin above it — that idea has been marketed since these machines first appeared in gyms and it isn't how fat loss works.
- Treating either machine as a primary leg exercise rather than an accessory — compound moves like squats and lunges do far more for overall leg strength and size.
Frequently asked questions
Do abductor and adductor machines help you lose thigh fat?
No. You cannot selectively burn fat from the area above a muscle you're training — that's spot reduction, and it's a myth these exact machines have been marketed against for decades. Fat loss happens across the whole body based on overall calorie balance, not which muscle you isolate.
Are inner and outer thigh machines worth buying for a home gym?
For most people, no. Banded lateral walks, clamshells and side lunges train the same hip abduction and adduction muscles for the cost of a resistance band, and they're what most trainers and physios recommend as a starting point anyway.
What can I do instead of an abductor machine at home?
Banded lateral walks are the closest match — loop a band above your knees or around your ankles and side-step in a slight squat. Standing band abduction and side-lying leg raises are good alternatives too.
Is the abductor machine good for building glutes?
It does work the gluteus medius, a smaller glute muscle on the side of the hip that contributes to hip stability and some visible shape, but it's a supporting player, not the main glute muscle. The gluteus maximus, which does most of the work in squats, lunges and hip thrusts, responds far more to compound leg training.
