Hip Thrust Machine
A hip thrust machine braces your upper back against a padded yoke while you drive a loaded lever upward with your hips, training the same movement as a barbell hip thrust without needing to load and balance a bar across your lap. It mainly trains your glutes, with your hamstrings assisting. For a UK spare room, a barbell (or even a loaded backpack) and a bench does the identical exercise for a fraction of the price — which is the honest starting point before buying one.
What does it actually train?
The hip thrust is a hip-extension movement, and its prime mover is the gluteus maximus — the biggest muscle in the body and the one most responsible for driving your hips forward. Your hamstrings assist throughout, since they also cross the hip joint, and depending on foot position your quads pick up some of the load too. Because your torso stays braced and roughly horizontal throughout, very little of the work leaks into your lower back the way it can on a poorly executed deadlift.
Where gym marketing overstates it: hip thrusts are often sold as "the best glute exercise" full stop, which isn't quite right. Research on glute activation does show hip thrusts producing high activation specifically at end-range hip extension — the locked-out top position — in a way that squats don't emphasise as much. But that's a different strength curve, not a universally superior one. Squats and lunges load the glutes through a deep stretch that a hip thrust barely touches. Neither movement makes the other redundant, whatever a single exercise's marketing claims.
Do you need one at home?
No, and this is one of the clearer cases on this site. A hip thrust machine exists to solve one specific annoyance — balancing and cushioning a barbell across your hips on a home bench is fiddly and can bruise you without a pad. The machine fixes that discomfort. It doesn't do anything to the muscle that a barbell, a hip pad (or a folded gym mat) and a bench don't already achieve, and most of the foundational research on hip thrusts was carried out with exactly that free-weight setup.
The case for one is almost entirely about comfort and convenience: if you're hip-thrusting heavy, regularly, and the bar-on-hips discomfort is genuinely stopping you training properly, a machine removes that friction. For most people doing a couple of glute-focused sessions a week, it's an expensive comfort upgrade to a movement a bench and a barbell already cover.
What to use instead at home
All four of these load the same hip-extension pattern the machine trains, scaled to whatever equipment you've actually got.
- Barbell hip thrust off a bench or sofa
Sit with your upper back braced against a flat bench (or a sturdy sofa edge), roll a loaded barbell over your hips with a pad or folded towel underneath it, and drive up. This is the exact movement the machine copies, and it's the version most of the original research on hip thrusts was actually done with.
- Banded hip thrusts
No barbell? A resistance band anchored under your feet or looped around your hips and a fixed point adds real resistance to the same bench-supported position, at a cost of a band rather than a machine.
- Single-leg hip thrusts
Bodyweight or holding one dumbbell on your hips, done one leg at a time against a bench, adds difficulty without adding load — useful if you don't have a barbell heavy enough, or you want to address side-to-side strength differences.
- Glute bridges on the floor
The simplest regression: flat on the floor, knees bent, drive your hips up. Less range of motion than a bench version, but it needs nothing except floor space and is a sensible starting point before adding load.
If you do want one
Home-scale hip thrust machines are usually freestanding, plate-loaded units with a padded shoulder yoke and a hinged lever your hips drive against. Look for a yoke pad wide and firm enough not to dig into your shoulders under load, a seat or pad position that adjusts to fit your torso length (a fixed pivot point that doesn't suit your build will feel wrong no matter how much you load it), and a stable base — the whole unit takes your full driving force through the hips, so a light frame will rock.
Most freestanding units need roughly 1–1.5m of length and 0.7m of width, plus space behind for you to sit down onto the machine. As a rough, unverified UK guide, expect somewhere around £250–£700 for a home-scale plate-loaded unit — always check current listings, since this bracket moves and commercial-grade versions cost considerably more.
Common mistakes on a hip thrust
- Hyperextending the lower back at the top instead of stopping at full hip extension — the glutes should lock the rep out, not the spine arching further.
- Letting the chin jut forward and the neck crane back, which tends to happen automatically once the lower back starts doing the work instead of the glutes.
- Placing the feet too far forward or too far back. Too far forward under-loads the glutes and shifts stress to the lower back; too far back turns it into more of a quad-dominant leg press.
- Skipping the pause at the top — a brief squeeze at full hip extension is where a hip thrust does its most useful work, and rushing straight back down cuts that short.
- Letting a poorly positioned hip pad dig into the stomach or hip bones, which makes people instinctively stop the rep short of full range to avoid the discomfort.
